Care guide
Five habits, ten years.
Handwoven cotton rewards a few small kindnesses. None of these steps are precious — they’re the same routine our grandmothers followed, written down so you don’t have to guess.
- 01
First wash, cold and alone
Wash the sheet by itself in cold water before the first use. Hand-block prints carry a thin coat of fixative that releases in the first cycle — keeping the wash solo protects your whites. Use a mild liquid detergent; skip bleach and fabric softener entirely.
- 02
Cool machine, gentle cycle
For every wash after, run a gentle cycle below 30°C with similar colours. Indian cotton softens with each wash, but heat above 40°C will shrink the weave and dull the dye. A 600–800 rpm spin is plenty.
- 03
Dry in shade, never the tumble
Line-dry inside out, away from direct sun. Tumble dryers are the single fastest way to wear out a handloom sheet — the friction breaks the long staple our cotton is specifically chosen for. A breezy shaded balcony does in two hours what a dryer ruins in twenty minutes.
- 04
Iron warm if you must
Most of our weaves don't need ironing — a quick smoothing while still slightly damp is enough. If you prefer crisp, iron on the cotton setting from the reverse side, especially over printed areas.
- 05
Fold loose, store dry
Store folded loosely in a cotton bag or open shelf, never in plastic. Cotton needs to breathe; airtight storage traps moisture and dulls the hand. A muslin bag and a sandalwood block is the old way, and still the best.
